The Cruelest Show on Earth
A message from Jessica Suhre, President of CHACE

I'm sure that in the past the phrase "The Circus is Coming to Town!" used to send kids home racing to their parents in excitement and send parents into a feeling of warmth as they prepared for their family outing. For many families that is the case still today. To us at CHACE, it causes a string of emotions, with dread, rather than excitement, being first and foremost. Ringling Brothers is notorious for abusing their animals, yet somehow are permitted to continue business. Going to Google and typing in "Circus Cruetly" gave me much information, more than I want stored in my mind. With this much information out there, it is obscenely curious how many people still attend the circus today.

From The Animal Defense League (ADL), I learned that in 1998 Ringling Brothers forced a baby elephant to perform even when he was known to be ill. Also that year, a trainer killed a tiger after the tiger attacked his 'trainer'. PETA has a site, www.circuses.com, that compares reality to what Ringling Brother's claims about their circus. They state that Ringling Brothers continually and consistently deny any type of abuse to their animals, yet have been cited for any number of abuses, from causing unnecessary trauma to the animals, to failure to provide veterinary care, to failure to provide sufficient space for their animals. The sites also report that these citations number more than 80 in the past 7 years.

So after visiting these two sites, I decide to travel to www.ringling.com to see what they advertise. No wonder the public goes to the circus! It sounds like a wonderful place for animals to exist. They claim that they give animal care by trainers 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. They state that humane treatment is the essence of the bond between trainer and animal.

Chillingly I read the following: "The animals make up their own movements," says John Kirtland, executive director of animal stewardship. "We watch how they move while they are playing and create routines based on these movements. We can't make them do anything they don't want to do, so we adapt their routines from behaviors they do naturally." This absolutely contradicts undercover footage of abuses to animals to make them perform the required tasks. The cages and carriers the animals are stored in hardly allow for 'play' or for the animals to display their 'natural behaviors'.

Though I do see that the publics' skepticism is of concern to Ringling Brothers. There is a page devoted to the animals, with pages for 'Animal Care' and 'Training and Performance' and 'Laws We Live By'. There is also a space to type in animal care concerns to search their website for an answer. Obviously they are finally feeling some pressure from the animal rights community.

THAT IS WHY WE ARE ASKING YOU TO ACT.
Only we can speak up for these animals that live their lives in chains, that are stored in compartments that do not allow them range of motion, and that are murdered when they have finally had enough and try to escape by any means necessary. Only we can try to end this suffering and abuse.

Write Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and let them know your feelings on the reality of their business.
